Capiz, the Windowpane Oyster…

image

The windowpane oyster, Placuna placenta, also known as Capiz in the Philippines, is a bivalve marine mollusk in the family of Placunidae. Among the species in the genus, only the Placuna placenta has an outer shell translucent enough for commercial use.

In the Philippines, many houses, specially in the rural areas, still have lamps and windows made out of Capiz. I chanced upon this Capiz lamp in a flower shop near the office of one of my clients. If you happen to visit the Philippines, these are the things you might want to bring back to your country as a souvenir. 🙂
